Climbing Plants: Adding Height, Colour,

Yes! Although you may need a trellis or something similar at the back of the planter for the plants to grow up. Why not check out the range of trellis planters we have available. Some varieties of climbing plants like ivy can attach to walls or panels without support.

Most climbers benefit from support such as wires, trellises, or netting. Self-clinging varieties like ivy or climbing hydrangea can attach to walls or panels without help.

Clematis montana, honeysuckle, and climbing roses are popular fast-growing choices, ideal for quickly covering walls or fences.

It's best to plant in spring or autumn when the soil is moist and temperatures are mild, allowing roots to establish well. However patted varieties can be planted at any time of year.

Most are harmless, but vigorous self-clingers like ivy can penetrate weak mortar. Use trained supports to protect surfaces if needed.

Choosing the right planter size is important for plant health. Generally, you’ll want a planter that’s 1–2 inches larger in diameter than your plant’s root ball for smaller plants, and 2–4 inches larger for larger plants. This provides enough room for growth without too much excess soil.

Both options exist. Evergreen climbers provide year-round cover, while deciduous varieties often offer seasonal flowers and foliage colour.
